BACK TO BACK" WOOL CHALLENGE

The 15th International "Back to Back" Wool Challenge and Apple Pie Bake-Off - a fund raising event for Breast Cancer Research is on again.

The Wool Challenge is to hand shear a sheep, spin the wool & knit a sweater for the shearer (from the sheep's back to the shearer's back) in the fastest time. The world record is 4 hours, 51 mins. Two teams (a team consists of 8 - a shearer & 7 spinners & knitters) will take up the challenge this year at The Turpentine Tree, 1665 Bells Line of Road, Kurrajong Heights. Shearing starts at 8 am. Who bakes the best apple pies using Bilpin apples? Find out on this day! Sean from Sean’s Panaroma in Bondi will decide. Along with an antique machinery display, lots of stalls, children's activities using fibre & BBQ cooked by the Mt. Lagoon Fire Brigade, there will be a Children's Art Competition. Come & enjoy a wonderful day in 10 acres of beautiful gardens, cheer on & sponsor a team member & help us raise the most money for the event in the world, as we did in 2008.

5th Collectors’ Plant Fair at Bilpin  

Sydney’s treasured Gardening Event
At ‘Woodgreen Angus Stud’, 27 Powells Road Bilpin NSW 9–4 Saturday 18 April & 9–3 Sunday 19 April 2009
Entry: $10 per person, $8 if pre-paid.
Speaker Sessions: $22 per person

The Fair brings together 40 specialist nurseries, from Eastern Australia, to sell old fashioned, rare and unusual plants to over 3,000 avid gardeners. Plant species suit inland and coastal gardens from acreage to courtyards. Visitors can buy garden equipment, books and learn about keeping chooks. Enjoy delicious food in the beautiful ‘Woodgreen’ garden. The Speaker Program features Australia’s highly regarded landscape designers and horticulturists. In 2009 they are Ken Gillanders OAM and David Glenn, Lambley Nursery. Fair organisers have received horticultural and tourism awards. Funds are raised for Lifeline and local Rural Fire Brigades.

Larna Ezzy’s Packing Shed Patchwork is nestled in picturesque Grose Vale. The textile studio, set amongst acreage garden, is a must see venue for the textile lover where Larna teaches and exhibits her one-off hand made textile pieces. Crazy patchwork ‘assemblage’ is her specialty and her pieces have been published in textile magazines over the years. Larna’s studio stocks many beautiful items for the embellisher/embroiderer to purchase or book into a class/workshop to learn new skills.

Fernbrook Garden & Botanical Art Gallery  

Fernbrook garden is one of Australia's most beautiful woodland gardens with a careful mix of native exotic species, a rainforest walk, mossy boulders, 2 creeks and abundant birdlife. The garden covers an area of approx 12 acres and includes a stone weir built in 1900 and a cork tree planted around the same time.
Fernbrook Gallery is the working studio of Elaine Musgrave who is a well known botanical artist being a member of the Botanical Art Society of Australia and the American Society of Botanical Artists. Elaine has exhibited internationally and was awarded a gold medal by The Royal Horticultural Society, London.
Watch the artist at work as she creates her finely detailed watercolour studies. Original works and limited edition prints by Elaine and invited artists.

Zig Zag Railway Co-op Ltd  

The Zig Zag Railway Ltd. Co-op is a preservation society running steam trains and rail motors from Clarence Station on The Bells Line of Road. The 'Zig Zag' was recognised as one of the great engineering feats of its time and crosses three magnificent sandstone viaducts in its 210m descent. The Zig Zag Railway is open every day of the year except for Christmas Day. Trains depart 11am, 1pm & 3pm.
